a sad then happy then sad story

no doubt about it, a terrible story. it was bad enough to begin with. 13 miners trapped in a coal mine explosion. last night they announced
that they had found the body of one of the miner’s. i believe it was reported he was not a part of the production crew, i guess making
him the foreman, but i am not sure. around midnight last nite it was reported on just about every news channel that they had found the
remaining 12 miners alive! an amazing and happy ending to a horrible story.

during my morning browsing of the news sites, i fired up cnn.com expecting to read stories about what the miners
had done to survive, stories of happiness from the families, but that was not the case. it appears somewhere along the lines of communication
there was a slight screw up. it turns out there was only one survivor. he
is currently in critical condition.
who is to blame? at the highest level, obviously the owner of the mine, as it has been reported there were several safety issues with the mine.
but what about the media? are they to take the blame in any of this? mind you, they are not the ones that originally made the mistake, but they
sure as hell took it and ran with it. media coverage of an event is fine, but shouldn’t there be a limit? but we feed it don’t we? we sit glued
to the television, watching the same reports for hours, hoping there will be new information. we feed the media frenzy. catching up on topics is
one thing, but i think we need to step away from the set.
