My son’s school describes an unexcused absence as the following:
Their seven reasons for an excused absence are:
- Illness or Injury
- Quarantine
- Death in the Immediate Family
- Medical or Dental Appointments
- Court or Administrative Proceedings
- Religious Observance
- Educational Opportunity
Nothing too serious with all that. And being that Talon is only in kindergarten, I am not too worried about him not being at school without his mother
or myself knowing about it.
This afternoon I received an email from the school that stated:
The consequences for tardies will be as follows:
- Parents will be charged $25 for 3 unexcused tardies for first period of the morning.
**Lower school students will be fined without detention. - Students will serve after-school detention for 3 unexcused tardies for all other periods.
I have to be honest, I am quite shocked and extremely upset at the first point. It’s not that I have to worry about this myself, as
Talon and I get to school with plenty of time to spare. But who do they think they are to “discipline” the parents by charging them
money for tardiness?
I can see giving kids detention (the older ones) for being tardy to class, but charging a parent money! Absolutely absurd. If they do this,
I wonder what they will start charging for next?
I have actually just completed and sent in Talon’s registration for next year, but after receiving this I am not 100% certain I want him to continue
there. I am not so much worried about the money, but it is the principle.
