This morning Talon and I stopped by Home Depot to pick up a few items. After getting the items we needed, and a few that we didn’t, we headed for the checkout area. Now, first let me explain how Home Depot has changed their setup. It is now all self check out. They have one cashier attended lane, but that is rarely open, like today.
So I get to my little register and start my attempt at scanning things. Beep. Beep. Some things scan quickly enough, while a few others are taking several swipes at the machine. Add to that the fact that I have to pretty much search every side of every item I have to find the damn UPC code.
Done. Time to pay. How will you be paying? Today (as most days) I will be paying by check. "Please take your check to the cashier counter" Off we go.
When my turn finally arrived at the counter (she was sorting out some bloke’s credit card purchase), I asked her what the total was. The lady looked at me and said, "Oh, I don’t know" I was like… "uh, can’t you look it up from where you are?" She did. I wrote my check and we left.
Now don’t get me wrong the self checkout thing is great (IMO) when you have just a few items, not a friggin cart full! It is also a P.I.T.A. when you are writing a check.
Here’s what I want to do. When I am at a hardware store, I want to be able to lazily look for items I need and also what I don’t need. I want to then take my cart to the front and have someone (besides me) scan all the shit, give me a price and take my money. That’s all, end of story. I do not care to ring the shit up myself, unless I happen to have one item and $5.00 cash in hand. Customer service, my ass. I was pissed. My typing here cannot even begin to convey how effing hot I was this morning, add to that the fact that my hand was still killing me. Bah, Home Depot = Buncha Wankers.

With the help of RID it won’t be long before we just push our basket through a scanner and use our thumbprint to confirm the purchase.
Did you know Food Lion used to be Food Town but got sued by another Food Town and had to change their name. The owners decided on “Lion” since they only had to change 2 letters in the name thus saving a fortune on signage.
Depending on what you believe, that sounds a bit, “mark of the beast”-ish to me.
I didn’t know that about the name, interesting.
