An Inconvenient Truth

Posted by Critter under Media

This film is definitely worth a viewing.

Plot Outline: A documentary on Al Gore’s campaign to make the issue of global warming a recognized problem worldwide.

Regardless of your opinions of Al Gore. This is definitely worth a viewing.

Time to play catch up.

Wow. It has been an extremely busy week/end.

Friday

We took Phoenix back to the surgeon at Duke. His appointment was for this week, but it was moved up due to his lack of weight gain. The surgeon suggested to just increase the amount he was being fed. He obviously doesn’t (or didn’t) share the same concerns that we have about his intestines not working properly.

Jenene met with one of the lactation consultants after her meeting with the surgeon. They measured the caloric content of her breast milk. It came back as being above average in calories. So caloric intake does not seem to be the problem. We are concerned parts of his intestine are not absorbing the nutrients as they should be. Perhaps they just haven’t started working fully yet. We go back this Friday for another weight re-check. We both believe his face looks like he is gaining weight these last few days, but
I guess we’ll see.

Saturday

So Saturday I finally got off my butt and started to finish the trim work for the kitchen. It wasn’t long before I became overly frustrated trying to tack the finishing nails into the trim
while attempting to keep everything level and square. Seriously, even pre-drilling the holes just didn’t cut it. I headed to Lowe’s with the intention and hope of picking up a reasonably priced nail gun. I found a  couple nail guns at decent prices, and then I noticed this. We already have an air compressor, but this one is more portable. I seriously do not know how I have ever
gotten by without one of these. It knocked the trim time down to a mere portion of what it would have been. My mind has been racing as to what to build with it next. I think a new cage for Corona is in order, as well as a new doghouse for Brandy. Look out Bob Villa, Critter’s got an air gun!  It rules —>

Sunday

So… early Sunday morning I walked downstairs to my office and stepped off the bottom step into a puddle of water. The carpet was absolutely soaked. I knew immediately what the cause was. It had happened once before. A drain under the house that goes from one side to the other had separated. I went under the house and sure enough that was the problem. The pipe had somehow separated at a joint. It was way too early to get the parts I needed from Lowes, and I was missing a part from the
shop-vac, so there wasn’t much I could do except wait until 8:00 am.

I sat down at the computer and pulled up popurls.com. I saw a post on Digg that mentioned Walmart was going to get a few Wiis in on Sunday. I thought it couldn’t hurt to go see if they have them in and at the same time, I can go ahead and get the part for the shop-vac and start vacuuming up the water.

As I walked up to Walmart at 6:30 am, I saw a boy and his mother exiting the store. I could see a Wii in their bag. My heart started to beat a little faster.

Might I really be able to get my hands on the hard to get Wii finally?

As I walked through the store, I saw two Japanese gentlemen at one of the checkout counters with their newly obtained Wiis.

I sped up my pace to a very non-chalant brisk walk — almost run. I flew around the corner where the Wiis should be, and found. Nothing.

The two gentlemen at the counter had purchased the last one. *sigh* Maybe next week.

Oh yeah. I fixed the pipes under the house. They should not separate again!

Soon… It’s coming.

It took forever, at least in Talon’s eyes, but his first tooth has finally come out. It has been wiggly for quite some time, and for some reason he wouldn’t let me pull it out. I had promised him it wouldn’t hurt, but he didn’t believe me. tsk tsk. Has daddy ever lied to you boy? :)

And of course, the tooth! Apparently it had started to bleed a bit at school. He was able to pull it out by gripping it with a paper towel. I wonder what the Tooth Fairy will leave him?

So where does it all go?

Hopefully, first thing in the morning we will get a call back from Phoenix’s surgeon (or one of the nurses). He hasn’t gained any weight since he’s been home. Mind you, he hasn’t really lost any, but he should be putting on at least 1/2 oz. each day. And so far he is at the same weight he was when he left the hospital. Our doctor’s appointment last week showed him to be in the 10 percentile for his weight, so they scheduled him for a re-check today. He hasn’t gained a thing. :(

Myspace and American Idol

Posted by Critter under Random Stuff

DeathByCamera has looked up the Myspace profiles of the contestants shown in the season premieres of American Idol.

Have you wanted this show? OMG! Do some of these people really believe they have a chance at “stardom” ?

You know you want to look.

This is from the email we received (yesterday, I believe)

Inclement Weather
In the case of snow or other dangerous weather or emergency situations, a decision may be made to delay or close the school. As soon as a decision is made to close the school, TV-5 WRAL and TV-11 WTVD are notified. Parents should NOT call radio or television stations to determine whether school is closed, through it may be helpful to check their websites. In the case of a school closing or delay, a recorded message will also be left on the school phone line (398 6220) announcing a school closing, cancellation,
or early dismissal.

That’s all fine and well, but I really don’t watch all that much TV. If anything I download my shows and watch them on the computer.

I do regularly read the local news websites. Is it really that difficult for them to give some type of notification to a website? Everybody else seems to be able to do it. It’s a lot easier to remember WRAL.com than it is to dig up a number. For me at least, but who knows, I’m getting old.

UPDATE:

I was just about to post this when I noticed they finally posted it to the wral.com’s website. I would have left the house over an hour ago had I relied on the website alone. A little earlier next time, if you would please.

Baby update!

Posted by Critter under Talon

I know, I know, you are sick of the baby updates, right? Yeah, me too, but he’s just too damn cute to not post pictures for the family!

His first bath Phoenix has his first sit in a tub type bath the other day. He was none
too pleased. The remaining bits of his umbilical cord finally fell off the other day. I know, finally, right? The Dr. Rice had tied his scar right up to his belly button. We’ll have to see how it turns out as he grows up. He might be more self-conscience about a mucked up belly button than a scar. I figure worse case scenario, we can always have it “adjusted” if needed.

He’s still sucking down his food like he should be and passing it right through. Straining like a little mad man - you would think his head is going to pop off.

Talon is a big help with Phoenix. He’s almost over-helpful (new word?!). If Phoenix even makes the slightest sound Talon is right there to check on him and pat him on the head. I think he is a little bit worried that the baby will get sick or something. I keep having to reassure him that the baby is alright. I’m sure he’ll relax over time.

I keep trying to play with the baby, but all he does is just lay there and wiggle his arms in the air. You would think by now he would be able to crawl across the room when I call him or something. sheesh. :)

Phoenix being burped

I know the picture looks bad, but I was burping him and holding him from the front.

Our First Snow Day.

Posted by Critter under Family

I do love how things look with a light coating of snow. It is amazing how different things look.

This is the last photo I took of Talon outside. Milliseconds after this was snapped there was a sudden blockage of wetness on my lens. lol

Talon takes aim

I must be getting old.

Besides the gray in my hair and the white in my beard, I am actually sitting here watching American Idol. It’s actually quite comical, some of the “performers”. The remarks from the judges are priceless.

All is well on the home front. Phoenix is doing well. He is a good baby and doesn’t really cry unless he is wet or hungry (so far). Talon was the same way, though, a very good and quiet baby. Phoenix is eating like a little madman, which is good, because he does need to put on some weight.

We had our first doctor’s appointment with him yesterday. He weighed 7 lbs 13 ozs and measured 19.5 in. in length. He is in the 10th percentile for both weight and length, so he has some catching up to do. He’ll get there though.

The nights have been decent, we pretty much have to wake him up for his feedings, and prod him during the feeding to keep him awake.

I had forgotten how much babies strain to push when they go poop. It doesn’t make much sense. He’s not throwing out a log or anything. I think pudding is thicker than his poo. *shrug*

Ah well… he’s crying for food now. I’ll get some new pictures up tomorrow for ya’ll.
