Talon’s achievement award

Posted by Critter under Family

Talon’s appearance is around 2:46

Nicely done, buddy!

Found this in my truck this morning. Brrrr

Do you remember it? I do. It was an cluster. Talon was at my mother’s, a trip that normally takes me (at that time) 30-40 minutes. It took me around 6 hours to get to him.

The ground has pretty much been frozen for several days, so as soon as the snow fell it turned to ice. The schools dismissed early, flooding the roads with buses, and parents running to and from to get their kids.

My truck has 4-wheel drive, so I just threw it in 4-Lo and trucked on down the road. Four wheel drive vehicles rule!

It was sad, though, I would see these little cars attempt to go up a hill. They would slide back down then go off another way. But right behind little car ‘A’ was little car ‘B’, who had seen little car ‘A’ slide down the hill, but little car ‘B’ apparently thought he was much craftier than little car ‘A’, at least until he slid down the hill… It was a very repetitive scene.

We are supposed to get doused tomorrow. No, seriously… according to them, it’s for real this time!! I guess we’ll see.

/me crosses fingers. (winter wouldn’t be complete without at least one snowfall, yeah?)

Another alleged potential disaster averted. I pulled into the gas station the other night on my way to a meeting, and every pump was occupied. After a few minutes, I was able to pull up and start to fill up. I don’t think I have ever been at a pump that ran so slow. After (I kid you not) 10 minutes I hadn’t even managed to get 10 gallons into the truck. I gave up and left. There was absolutely no way in hell I could sit there and wait for the truck to fill up completely. Besides that gas station is friggin over-priced. Eggs were just about totally sold out at the grocery store. I don’t get that. I thought the idea was to stock up on things that can be eaten without power.

Here Jimmy, suck down this raw egg. No it’s good, I swear. Oh yeah? Well Rocky did it and he’s super strong. Do it now!

Talon’s school has been delayed 2 hours. Nobody mentions whether the buses are still running. Idiots.

I was going to grow my hair out. I lasted a week. I am weak.

Guitar Hero III Rocks. Add me: 433914994183. I do still suck though. Patience, I will get better.

I noticed this morning that the white (yes white, not gray) hairs in my beard are all longer than the other beard hairs. Maybe the regular beard hairs will get jealous, and overpower the white ones and beat them into non-existence. Not that I care too much, I would totally dye it all white if I could. That would be cool.

That’s all I got.

How to nap successfully

Posted by Critter under News Items

Scientists say that a successful midday nap depends on two things: timing and (no kidding) caffeine consumption. Experiments performed at Loughborough University in the UK showed that the sleep-deprived need only a cup of coffee and 15 minutes of shut-eye to feel amazingly refreshed.

  1. Right before you crash, down a cup of java. The caffeine has to travel through your gastro-intestinal tract, giving you time to nap before it kicks in.
  2. Close your eyes and relax. Even if you only doze, you’ll get what’s known as effective microsleep, or momentary lapses of wakefulness.
  3. Limit your nap to 15 minutes. A half hour can lead to sleep inertia, or the spinning down of the brain’s prefrontal cortex, which handles functions like judgment. This gray matter can take 30 minutes to reboot

Wayne Sutton a new/social media evangelist from NBC17 contacted me via Twitter the other day and asked if I would be interested in doing an interview about local bloggers.

We did the interview at Panera Bread. The weather yesterday was oddly warm, so we took advantage of that and did the interview outside.

I think it turned out good. I think I talk with my hand too much, though :).

I’ve embedded the video below. You can view the article here.

Hey Critter

Posted by Critter under General

Hey bud, how’s it going?

*shrug* One day at a time, I guess. I haven’t written much due to the fact that one person in the family has been ill. Talon became sick just as Christmas vacation started. He was pretty ill for a couple of days, but then he’s been pretty lethargic and tired ever since.

I took him to the doctors the other day and they did some blood work. One of “his lines” was elevated. They drew more blood to send off to be tested for mono. I guess we’ll find out Tuesday, but he’s been doing better. It is just possible he was totally wiped out by the virus.

For New Year’s, we traveled to Wilmington to stay with a mate of mine and his family. It was a /really/really/ fun trip. It was nice to get away from reality for a while. We (all of us) ate 3 bushels of steamed oysters. I was having flashbacks to when I worked at Crabby Bill’s while I shucked them. Talon was able to stay up with everyone and welcome in the new year, but he crashed out shortly afterwards. The majority of us all ended up staying up until 4am. I’m too old for that shit LOL. Especially when I wake up early regardless of when I crash out. Needless to say, 8am came around rather quickly. It was a good time though. I think we all had a blast.

It is a shame our visits to the beach are so far in between, but hopefully we can change that.

Work has been so/so, nothing too exciting, nothing too boring

I have a couple of personal projects I have been working on. I might have mentioned them before, but I cannot for the life of me remember, and I am feeling too lazy to have a gander and see.

Project #1 is an AIR implementation for Seesmic. Seesmic is still very much in pre-alpha, and things will definitely evolve more as it goes along. I will have a ton of changes to make to my app, but that’s ok, it will keep me busy. www.seesmicAIR.com

Project #2 is another Seesmic project. There are members on Seesmic from all over the world. A few weeks ago we had a discussion on Seesmic about the general lack of geographical knowledge of the world. *wheels spinning*  I was probably on the crapper when the idea hit (I do my best thinking there), why not have the Seesmic users do a video and explain a little bit about where they live? I made a post on Seesmic explaining what I wanted to do, and the response has been great. I do my best to keep the thread bumped up daily so that new users can see it as well. I have also had great support (on both projects) from the Seemic team. Loic Le Meur (founder of Seesmic), even wrote a post on his blog in English and French. You can view the replies on www.seesmicworldprject.com

Anyway, that’s about as good as a catch up from me as you are going to get today. I am sick as hell.

Cleaning off the camera.
