Anniversaries

Today is the 1 year anniversary of something that no longer exists.

It sucks.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 3 years already. We had just come home from Talon’s Christmas Play from School. Your mother was feeling a little bit of pain, but did not seem too concerned. Your mommy came in the room and said it was time, that we should head out to the hospital.

We casually gathered things together, and loaded up the car. I remember standing there with the car door open and asking, “I wonder why the light is off in the car?”. In an instant the calmness stopped as your mother yelled, “Get in the damn car!” (Apparently the pain had increased.)

The trip to Duke Hospital normally takes around 30-40 minutes, but I can barely remember it. It’s all a blur. When we arrived at the hospital they ushered us into a room and the nurses checked out your mother. We were informed she was not far enough along to be admitted, and that we should be home. We informed the nurses of our situation and the importance of you being born at Duke, and they admitted us.

Most of the night’s recall is a bit of a blur. I remember bits and pieces leading up to moving to the operating room. I do remember all of the operating room, though.

You see, buddy, we found out when you were only 18 weeks inside your mother’s belly that there was a slight problem. You had Gastroschisis. The short of it is… your intestines were on the outside of your body. We were scared when we first found out. There was so much to worry about as your were growing inside of your mother. People kept telling us everything would be ok, but they didn’t know. It used to piss me off. The doctors said they could fix you. We kept finding stories online where the outcome wasn’t what one would hope for. We kept it together, but underneath, we were both a wreck.

There were a ton of people in the operating room. There were two doctors present. One to catch you, and one to catch your intestines.

I remember the second you were born. You did not make a sound, but your eyes were wide open. You looked right at me. For the rest of my life, I will never forget that look. They rushed you into the next room. I waited by your mother’s side as they finished taking care of her, my eyes on the little window that led into the other room. I needed to see if anyone one was walking faster than they should have been. Still not a sound from you. I was let in to see you after you were stabilized.

They had your wrapped in a plastic bag from the waist down to keep your intestines sterile. You were so tiny. They brought you by your mother so she could see you, then they took you off to get ready for surgery. It would be a long process to get your organs back in your body.

The doctors placed your intestines in a mesh bag called a ‘Silo’. The Silo was suspended above your body, and each day the doctors pushed a little bit more of your intestines into your body. They couldn’t do it all at once because your body wasn’t used to having the organs in there, and it didn’t have the room right away. The doctors were finally able to get your organs all the way in, and they closed you up. Now we had to wait. Since your intestines had been outside your body for so long, they had become hardened by the amniotic fluid you floated in while in your mommy’s tummy. We had to wait for them to heal themselves and start to work. Basically we were waiting for you to poop. After your final surgery, you were moved out of the NICU into a regular room.

You had a tube that went down your mouth and into your stomach. We hated that tube, but it kept your stomach drained. Sometimes we fought with the nurses. They would have the tube in too far, or not far enough. Someday you should ask mommy about air bubbles in your IV line. Phoenix, she was on top of it buddy!

So, anyway… here we are 3 years later, and if we didn’t tell you, you would never know there was something wrong when you were born. The doctors were able to close up the hole in your stomach without leaving a mark. You have a slight scar in your belly button and that’s it.

Happy Birthday, Phoenix, my little peanut. I love you.

Well it looks like I made it! I’m a wee bit sore and OMG it hurts to cough, but I’m sitting in recovery enjoying a cup of coffee!

Well, the recent turn of events in my life were pretty much unexpected. In fact just a couple of weeks ago during an ‘all hands on’ meeting we were assured (after the first 3 layoffs) that there would be no additional cuts to the company. Amazing what can transpire in just a couple of weeks.

I am having a bit of difficulty figuring out exactly what path I want to take with my career now. I have thoughts of going out on my own as a consultant, but that is almost best done if I have built up a bit of a bank. In addition to having a bit of savings to live off of, should work not pour in, I am not sure how the courts measure your income for child support.

It has to be tough enough wondering where your next job (meal) is coming from, but what if I am gauged at XXX amount, and I only bring in XX. Am I still responsible for child support based on XXX? Does that make sense? It does in my head *shrug*

I am definitely not putting all my eggs in the consultant basket. I will take whatever comes along. We’ll see…

And now, onto the good news! This is the last week of P90X. I am happy to have made it this far. And I am very pleased with my results. Meghann and I will be taking a week off and then we plan on starting the P90X Plus. It’s funny to have grown to love a workout that you hate so much!

I never got around to cutting and posting my 60 day pictures. Perhaps I’ll get them sorted and up the same time we do our 90 day pictures.

Like I said (and you can see by the picture below), I have had good results.. we both have. But we want more! Neither one of us watched our diet as closely as we could have, but we plan on keeping to it as strictly as possible for our next go round.

I want a single digit body fat percentage! oh… and I will have it

So, Friday sucked. It was on my way to an appointment with my lawyer when my phone rang. It was my boss. Hmmm I remembered an email he had sent around earlier that morning saying that there would be a big meeting for the San Fransico. At first I thought they wanted me to be in on that meeting, then it hit me.

All before I answered the phone.

I knew. I was about to be let go. My boss never calls. The call lasted 6 minutes. I was right.

When I was let go by First American in March this year, I had done a video on Seesmic saying that I was just made redundant and if anyone needed a developer… I was your man. Seesmic hired me two days later. That Skype call lasted 22 minutes.

I don’t believe I will be doing a video this time.

Here is a link to it on TechCrunch. The comments make for an interesting read.

Got work?

As you can see in the post below. Our snake started to have her babies today. At least that is what we thought. After waiting a while to see if any others popped out, I had a quick look under all the newspapers and saw a small clump of baby snakes.

I called Talon over so he could see them huddled up under the papers. He was just as excited as I was!

I pulled ‘mom’ out of the cage and then grabbed all the babies, sifting through all the aspen to make sure we didn’t miss any. She had a total of 9 babies and 1 slug (a slug is an undeveloped ovum?)

The video above is just a small one I captured from my phone (and yes, I realize it cuts off at the end).

I told Talon that he can pick out one of the babies and keep it as his pet. He was very excited when I first told him, but then he became pretty upset because he couldn’t keep /all/ of the babies! Silly boy.

I didn’t have anything in the tubs for reference, but trust me when I say.. they are tiny.

This weekend was a district (?) scout outing for Talon’s pack. We camped out from Friday evening until this morning. It was a busy, but fun weekend. Our tent is pretty large (it has a porch, ha!), so Talon’s buddy, Tyler, and his father crashed with us. I have a bunch of pictures to pull off my camera and post to Flickr, but these from my phone will do for now :)

The porch area keeps the kids busy.

@triangletweetup

Last night, I attended the 1st Triangle Tweetup. I would have to classify it as a success. Wayne Sutton did an excellent job of pulling it all together.

Prior to the tweetmeetup a bunch of us met up at McGregor’s Draft House for a quick pint or two. I arrived a few minutes early, and not really knowing what anyone looked like, I parked myself at the bar. I kept scanning the area for people that look like the might ‘get twitter’, but you really can’t stereotype that can you? While enjoying my lovely pint of Stella, I tweeted “… I’m the one with the hat… and a couple tattoos”. Not even a minute or two later, someone tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I was Critter? I was. The group was right behind me. Introductions were made — and I have to say this now, folks.. I suck at names. faces.. yeah… I can do faces.. names.. I are bad — and light conversation was made. The group quickly grew, so everyone moved outside for food and a bit of clear air.

fast forward a bit…

At the event location, name tags were applied and more mingling commenced. Introductions were made and we began. I have to admit, I have a hard time in general remembering what all was talked about, but I do remember all the conversations I had with people at the event.  I did a demo of Seesmic and showed off my Seesmic Racoon (you had to know it would make an appearance). Oh, I just remembered some of the things we talked about. *whew* I am not loosing it!

Anyway.. it was a great event, and it’s always nice to put faces with.. @names. Speaking of which… I ran into a guy I worked with back at MCI back in the early 2000’s — small world.

So thanks to all that worked to pull the event together. Well done.

Pictures on flickr tagged for the event.

continents_map_sm The other day on seesmic, we were actually discussing geography and the fact that so many people know so little.

This morning while making my outstanding, chocolate, oatmeal pancakes, I had a brilliant idea. Why not have the seesmic users post a video to Talon explaining where they are, and giving a few details about the area. I will go out and get a HUGE world map to put on our wall, then we will place cards on the map where the users live.

I think it has the potential to be a very fun and educational project for everyone involved. I posted about the idea this morning and replies are already coming in. Sweet! I have also asked for permission to use the videos here on my blog so you can travel along with us :)
