I was just accepted into the beta for Med.ium. It runs as a plugin for Firefox and so far seems pretty interesting.
Here are a few things from the FAQ:
What is Me.dium?
Me.dium is a window that reveals the hidden world of people and activity behind your browser. Through Me.dium, you can see your online world for the first time.
Why are all those websites floating around me?
All the websites that you see in the map are other sites that Me.dium is recommending for you based on what you are currently doing. Me.dium bases those recommendations on how your activity relates to the activity of other people using Me.dium.
Where did all these people come from?
All the people you see through Me.dium on the other websites are other Me.dium users. Although you may not know all of them, you can see them because their activity is in some way related to yours.
Can I talk to all those other people?
Yes, Me.dium provides two ways to talk to the other people. If they are people that you don’t know, you can post a message on the “Live” tab and anyone currently represented on your online world can see the message and reply. If they are in your Friend list, then clicking their name opens up a private chat window.
If I go to a different website, will I lose all the people I was chatting with?
Every time you change sites to a non-related site, you will see a new group of people based on your new activity. If you have started a chat with someone already, or have joined a chat in the Live Tab, those chats will be maintained and can be continued wherever you are on the web.
Can people I don’t know chat with me?
Yes, but not directly. Me.dium allows for strangers to communicate with each other via the Live tab. All users can start or join a conversation in Live. Users who choose to remain anonymous have their name displayed as a number instead of using their username.
You can turn it off at the click of a button so that ‘the others’ cannot see what sites you are on or visiting. It also shuts itself off on known personal sites, such as Gmail or Hotmail, etc..
*shrug* We’ll see how it goes. I’m not all that big into ‘chatting’ online with people, but it is still a very interesting concept.
If you are interested and cannot get in, leave a comment and I’ll send you an invite.
