A little Ouzo for you.

Posted by Critter under Gizmos & Gadgets

It is not the best quality. My lighting was bad, but I thought I would muck around with the camera. This guy was hungry so it worked out well for both of us. I removed the audio from the clip, since all you would hear was me flappin about.

ps. Ouzo is his name-o.

My computer keeps locking up. Stupid computer. Stupid, stupid computer. It looks the root cause is my USB drive. I use RoboForm for all my password, etc.. and it started acting all cock-eyed, then explorer started to shag up. Then I noticed it was RoboForm that was sluggish. Unplugged the drive and everything seems to be working as normal. I was able to get all my data off the drive. So that’s good.

Crap way to start the day.

Meh..

I actually feel like I have a million things to do. As I sit here and type, I feel as though I have the motivation equal to the speed of
a snail. meh.

I did finally pick up a switch for my network here, so rather than have two disjointed routers with two different gateways, I have one router
linked up to the switch leaving me with a plethora of ports. uh yay!

And of course I never got around to tackling Brandy’s fence yet. Time has been my enemy! I will bet getting it sorted tomorrow after
TaeKwonDo, I promise me.

And since I am rambling on, I might as well introduce you to our next potential breeder. She is a Pastel Hypo and
was born on May 11th, 2006. She probably won’t arrive for a few more weeks. She’s a beaut, isn’t she? The first picture
was taken just after birth.

Breeder has decided to keep her due to a possible strain of albinism he wants to encourage. *sigh* Oh well, perhaps the next litter.

To be honest, I am not quite sure what caused it. Not like it really matters, because it happened plain and simple. My harddrive croaked
– Did you get that? It died. It ceased to function. It worketh no more.
The past few days have all been such a blur, I am not sure if it happened on Thursday or Friday. Although, I am leaning towards Friday.

My computer had done some “automatic updates’ and needed to reboot. After rebooting, and just after the bios post it just hung. Nothing happened.
The harddrive would make a random noise, but the computer just sat at the baby blue “Welcome” screen.

Don’t panic

Ok, this is no big deal. I can handle this. Really, I can. I have a spare 300 GB SATA drive. It’s brand new, but I have only used IDE drives in the
past. I was pretty sure they had to make some sort of adapter, so I gave Intrex call. The bloke on the phone confirmed
they had the adapter I needed.

After picking Talon up from school — green again with no tally marks! — we drove over to Intrex and purchased the
adapter. I was expecting it to cost about $50, but was pleasantly surprised at it’s $14.95 price tag. The adapter and harddrive installed quickly
and painlessly, and within a few minutes I was reinstalling Windows XP.

The install completed without any complications. A few odds and ends needed to have their drivers reinstalled. No sweat,
Google was my friend. I couldn’t read the numbers on my video controller so I shut down the computer
and pulled the card out so I could read the numbers clearly. I put the card back in and started the computer up and.. Wait a second.
Nothing is happening! The computer is not going past the boot screen. It is just sitting there, no noise, no sound, nothing.

I took everything out of the computer and tried just about every combination of peripherals I could think of, but nothing worked. It seems the drive –
the brand new, never been used 300 GB drive — was dead. That will probably be my only experience with a SATA drive. I ran out and
purchased a 320 GB IDE drive and started the process all over again. This time things went as they should and 2.5 days later, I am finally getting
back online.

Once I get a bit of free time (stop laughing), I am going to attempt throwing my original dead drive and my new dead SATA drive into another
computer to see if I can get anything off of them.

Oh well, what can you do, really? So much of our lives are kept on and revolve around computers. When something happens, it can definitely
be an “Oh shit!” moment. *shrug* Maybe it is just me getting older, or maybe even wiser, but this time I did not panic. Screw it.

For those of you interested Microsoft has made Beta 2 of Office 12
available for the general public.

My installs went pretty smoothly except for the of OneNote. It threw an error. I sent in the report, I guess we’ll see what happens in
the next release. I might even try it again after a reboot. Those always seem to fix things. Wouldn’t that be funny? If the report
sent in just said “Error unknown. Suggestion - Reboot” ha! These versions of Office 12 are good until January of 2007, so you can play
for a while for free.

I was prompted to update my Windows Desktop Search for better searching in Outlook — I only use it for work, I am still a diehard
the Bat! fan — but after downloading the small desktop search install file. I kept getting an “Access
is Denied” error. After a bit of searching on the web I found this knowledge base article
on how to fix the problem. The article does state that if it doesn’t work the first time, keep doing it until it does. If you have to do it, you
will understand what they are talking about. It did take a while to complete, but eventually it installed with no problems.

Can you hear me now?

You will need to explain a few things for me, if you don’t mind. Although I tend to think of myself as a
technical-psuedo-nerd, keeping up to date with what I can do with a mobile phone (in terms of carriers, etc)
has me oh-so confused. Which, to be honest, isn’t that hard to do.

I currently have a HIPTOP AKA SideKick II. What I really need want is the ability to sync up with outlook
or an exchange server. I can get a decent price on a new BlackBerry, but it lacks a camera, and as sad as it may
sound, I love having a camera on my phone. I use it all
the time. I guess I should also mention that I am with SUNCOM,
and that actually leaves me a bit limited as to phone choices. Anyway, I have been looking at the TREO 650 and
actually wouldn’t mind investing in the TREO 700w. I have been thinking (scary thought, huh?) I might try to
get ahold of an unlocked 650, but not fully understanding the whole “unlocked” thing. I do not want to invest
in one unless I am sure that it will work on SUNCOM’s network. So, if you do not have any suggestions, I’ll
be Googlin’ and see what pops up..

I are a geek?

I was down the street reading
Wil Wheaton’s blog
the other day. The ant farm looked so cool, I knew I had to have one. I mean we.. we had to have one!
It arrived this afternoon. The led light base does not seem to be working, that will have to be returned.
I ordered the ants this afternoon, as well. Although, I am not quite sure how long they will take to get here.
I could probably get a decent collection of ants from outside, but I want to make sure I get the right kind.
I am geekily excited, and cannot wait for the ants to arrive.
Hopefully I can hold out until they arrive. I am sure Talon will enjoy it just as much :)

Oh yeah, the candies are some
chocolate covered coffee beans. They are yummy

So? Can you tell what is different? No, I didn’t color my hair (well,
I did, but that was last week, and the color Jeff used didn’t really take
all that much). No, I did not whiten my teeth, although I want to. Give up? Well,
I am posting this from my lovely linux
laptop! Yes, I understand your excitement too.

I am actually in the process of installing
fedora
on a spare computer I had just sitting around. Once I get it all
installed, I plan on giving MythTV a try. I am
currently evaluating SageTV and SnapStream’s
BeyondTV. I currently
have SageTV and BeyondTV running on my windows box. They seem alright, although
both of their interfaces seem to appear sluggish at times. The box has over
a gig of memory, so I would expect a little bit better response from the programs.

Update: I’ve also just installed
Media Portal. I have not run it yet,
but the interface seems to respond a bit smoother than the previously mentioned two.
Plus this one is FREE.

My goal of it all is to create a computer based
PVR that I can stream shows from
and watch them on my desktop. I have a
WINTV-Plus
card installed. The card comes with a remote (sweet!), but I have yet to get it
working with the system. *sigh* Back to Google
I go.

Anyway, as I know you are and will be on the edge of your seat until you find out
how it all goes, I shall keep you posted. Thank me.

Breaking away from the computers for a bit this weekend, I was able to get
out to Farrington Point
today on the kayak. It was beautiful out. The water was calm and the area was very
peaceful. There were at least a dozen other kayaks launching from the same area. I plan
on picking Talon up early tomorrow morning so we can launch from there. I don’t know who
enjoys it more, him or me? He gets excited just going, and I love being able to
take him out and do things like that. It’s a ton of fun, and I hope it gives him
some fond memories to look back on when he is older. I know it will me.

Well, that is it for me. I’m out. Later.

What does Ad Muncher do?

I have been using Ad Muncher since September of 2001, long before the browsers ever had built in popup protection. Even after switching
to Firefox, I still continue to use it. Not only does it just remove ads from your viewed webpages,
it also helps to “protect” you when viewing pages that contain malicious scripts. Like I said, I have been using it for years [knock on
wood] and it has kept my computer safe from many a things floating about.

Below is the blurb from AdMuncher.com. It is definitely worth an install. Ok, enough talk, go do it!

  • Blocks adverts in all browsers.
  • Blocks unwanted popups in all browsers.
  • Blocks adverts in programs like ICQ, Morpheus, Kazaa, Grokster, Opera, PalTalk, iMesh, Bearshare, LimeWire, etc.
  • Speeds up page loading, thanks to the missing adverts and popups.
  • Blocks many annoying site behaviors.
  • Filters quickly and reliably, thanks to six years of constant development and feedback from users.
  • Includes extensive options for those who like to tinker, allowing you to remove anything that annoys you.
  • Runs on Windows 95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP/2003.

I was dugg

Posted by Critter under Gizmos & Gadgets

Wow, talk about taking a hit. I posted the same free software list on a technical related website I run and it was posted to digg.com.

Of course, as I was attempting to login to my server last night, I was totally unaware of the lists posting to digg. The server was ridiculously sluggish and unresponsive. When I was finally able to login to the server, I noticed ColdFusion and apache were pegged and consuming all the available memory. It took a bit of probing around, but I was finally able to figure out what was going on from the log files. I saw links leading straight to the software post with www.digg.com as the referrer.

I ended up just shutting the server down, until the interest from the article died down a bit.
